In the autumn the pawpaws ripen. Hickory trees and hazel bushes let fall their bursting treasures. Walnuts blacken and drop to earth where faded leaves have previously prepared a soft carpet. Clusters of ripening wild grapes temptingly hang in festoons from limbs provokingly out of reach, while sumachs redden, and each tree in the forest assumes its appropriate hue.
